Dear Father:
The Holy See has given the recognitio for the Third Typical Edition of the Roman Missal. This signals another step on the path of liturgical renewal begun by the Second Vatican Council. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, we will welcome the Roman Missal in the context of the renewal and revitalization of our life of worship.
I can assure you from my close contact with the development of the Missal that, the principles, which have directed the development of the Third Typical Edition of the Missal, are those of the Second Vatican Council. The Archdiocese of Chicago has been an intentional leader in the renewal of the liturgy and the efforts we expend in meeting these challenges will be worthwhile because of the long-term result, a true enhancement of our worship in the spirit of the renewal envisioned by the Second Vatican Council. In other words, as we move toward making the Roman Missal our own, we will not only encounter challenges but also some truly graced opportunities.
The Church in all the English-speaking countries of the world will proceed with a common catechesis and preparation. We also need to do our own catechesis and preparation mindful of the particular circumstances of the Archdiocese of Chicago. To facilitate this process, I have asked Father Thomas Baima, Father Louis Cameli, and Father Richard Hynes, in consultation with the Episcopal Council, to coordinate and direct our Archdiocesan efforts to receive and to implement the revised Roman Missal. They will call on the many outstanding resources available to us in the Archdiocese including, of course, the Office for Divine Worship and the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, Liturgy Training Publications, as well as a number of experienced pastors.
As we begin this important process, I ask for your openness and cooperation as well as your prayers for its success. May the good Lord lead us to worship him who is our hope ever more surely in Spirit and in Truth. Know that you are in my prayers. Please remember me in yours.
Fraternally yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago |
