shape of the liturgy

Principles in the Institutio 2002

shape of the church

Influencing Art, Environment, and Architecture

A conference on Catholic liturgical architecture for pastors, architects,

diocesan liturgical commissions, parish building committees, artists,

diocesan liturgy directors, craftspeople and liturgical furnishers.

Mundelein, Illinois - October 22 - 24, 2003

That the approved English translation of the Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani 2002 is now available means that parishes are directed again to this universal document as they implement revisions and evaluate how they celebrate the Mass. Although the IGMR02 does not deal explicitly with architecture, the rubrics do speak about how the liturgical principles behind church decor, furnishings, and architecture are expressed ritually. This conference will discuss, in tandem, how those principles are expressed materially. The IGMR02 speaks about the shape of the rite; this conference will ask how the shape of the rite influences the shape of the church in which it is celebrated. Our goal with SHAPE OF THE CHURCH ~ SHAPE OF THE LITURGY is to approach these principles through examination of the document itself in light of the historical, theological, and practical perspectives which inform it. These questions will be explored through addresses, visual presentations, and the discussions of participants in the congenial atmosphere of Mundelein Seminary’s beautiful campus.
