The Place of Chant in the Liturgy Today

September 19-21, 2004

"The Place of Chant in the Liturgy Today" conference will address the growing renewal of sung liturgy in parishes across the nation. Suitable for priests and deacons, music directors, musicians, teachers, parish liturgy directors, diocesan worship office personnel and all of those interested in liturgical music, the conference will address the role of chant in post-Conciliar liturgy from liturgical, pastoral, and practical perspectives.

Conference Presenters
Edward Schaefer, Professor of Music, Gonzaga University, Director of the Gonzaga University Gregorian Schola and weekly Gregorian Liturgy at Gonzaga
Rev. Gary Uhlenkott, SJ, Associate Professor of Music, Gonzaga University, regular celebrant for Gregorian Liturgies at Gonzaga, 20 years experience as a facilitator in communications workshops

Gonzaga University Gregorian Schola

The Gregorian Schola sings Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony, in addition to the congregational chants. The group is open, by audition, to students and members of the community. Major performances for the schola have included the 2001 national convention of the American Choral Directors Association, the 2003 All-Northwest convention of the Music Educators’ National Conference and the 2004 regional convention of the American Choral Directors Association. With invitations to sing at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Chartres Cathedral and the abbey church at Mont Saint-Michel, the choir will travel to France from May 10-17, 2004.

 


Liturgies
 
Two Masses fully sung with Gregorian Chant, one with Proper chants from the Graduale Romanum, one with music from the Graduale Simplex and/or Paul Ford's By Flowing Waters.
 

Meals and Lodging

Meals and lodging for the conference are available at the University of Saint Mary of Lake/Mundelein Seminary Conference Center on the University's campus of 800 acres of wooded land, a 200 acre lake and beautiful Colonial Revival buildings. The campus is located about 45 minutes north of Chicago's O'Hare airport. All rooms have private bathrooms.  A gymnasium and indoor swimming facilities are available. Double occupancy rooms are available at a reduced per person rate.

Costs

Registration fee of $125.00 includes talks, practica, workshops, two evening socials, snacks, and coffee. The Liturgical Institute offers a special rate at the Conference Center at Mundelein Seminary of $35 per night for single occupancy lodgings and $8 per meal.
